Message: Tony, I didn't think there were many other Scarolas besides my relatives. My father came from Bari when he was a boy, about 14. I would say sometime in the 50's. My grandmother still lives in Italy along with an Aunt, Uncle and cousin. My father has 5 siblings; Mary, Rosa, Nina, Dominic and Angelina. Along with that I have a plethora of cousins. I am quite sure I have other relatives who are much older, who's names I have heard thrown around in a dozen stories but, I couldn't give you much information. I would be very interested in seeing what you are doing as well as possibly contributing as much information as I can with the cooperation of my family. Just so you get a better idea of who I am. I am a 24 year old Graphic Designer. I work in an ad agency in New York and currently study Art History part time at night. (So I have a natural interest in history of all sorts) Also if time allows, I offer my design experience to you as I have designed websites in the recent past.

Message: I think this page is great !!! I started doing some family research on family so this could be a great way to share and receive information. My grandfathers name is Michael Scarola and he had 3 brothers and 5 sisters. The order from oldest to youngest is Fay, Margie (Margeret), Anna, Sally, Michael, Philip, John, Charles, and Lee. Their parents were Guiseppe Scarola and Emelia, her maiden name was Castora. I've been able to get the social security applications of Sally, Michael, Philip and Charles but not the rest. I know Guiseppe had siblings but I don't know who they are yet. If any of this information sounds somewhat familiar to anyone let me know. Added 12/13/2002: I wanted to tell you a success story. After my grandfather died my family lost touch with my grandfathers oldest sibling Fay and her family about 20 years ago. Then about 3 weeks ago I got an e-mail from Fay's great grandson who saw my web posting of my family [on Scarolas.com]!!!! She's still alive and turning 95 this month !!!! I was able to talk to my dads cousin for the first time and it was an incredible experience and now we talk on a somewhat regular basis. This would have never happened without your efforts and I plan to go out to California next year and meet my grandfathers sister for the first time. I've attached and updated version of my family members. In fact I just sent an e-mail to 2 people tonight that I think I can prove that were related !!! Talk to you soon and merry Christmas. Ken Scarola. Added 09/06/2002: Hello everyone, I've been doing some more research and this is what I have come up with. Parents: Guiseppi (1883-1954) & Emilia Castora (1888-1960). Michael (born 1915 died 1989) & Rose Proscia children: Joseph & Regina Browne Barbara & Nichalos Androu Raymond. Philip (born 1917 died 1990) & Regina Lived in Saddle Brook New Jersey. children: Linda Debbie. John & Dorothy (Dotty). Charles (born 1924 died 2000) & Josephine. Leigh & Alvin Yadowski, Lived in Brooklyn. Children: Alvin. Guiseppi had a brother named Guido, had two children that I know of Michael and Francis. Michael married a woman named Susan and Francis married and had a girl but I don't know the name. It seems this part of the family ran a restaurant named Supreme Macaroni in Manhatten. I'm not sure if it's still run by the children. If any of this sounds familiar in any way please send me an e-mail. One off the messages mentioned a restaurant in NYC but she didn't leave an e-mail address. This sounds very similar to what I have could camille doherty-sardoni-scarola please contact me ? I think it would be nice if we could all exchange information.

Message: It's interesting to see how we Scarolas once cornered the ice market in Brooklyn. Will try to get more info, but here's what I know. my Grandfather, Vito, was in the ice business in Brooklyn, where he lived with his wife Rose. He died in '73, and she in 74', I believe. He had two sons, Joseph and James. Joseph is my father and James (Uncle Jimmy) died around 1977. Keep posting! - I've been working on a family tree and am still missing major segments, especially once it reaches back to Grumo Appulo.

Anthony, Scarola, Male, 1971
Message: My Father, Anthony Scarola's parents Joseph Scarola and Josephine Silletti, were both born in Bari, Italy. Joseph was born in 1895, and Josephine in 1898. They married in New York City in 1919. They lived in downtown NYC and moved to the Bronx in the early 1920's. Joseph had an interior design and upholstery business called Veterans Upholstery in Manhattan, and later, when the moved to Jersey City, N.J., in 1943, he had opened his store there also. When my father Anthony came home from World War II, he worked with his father and learned the trade. Joseph and Josephine had a total of nine children. They were and are: John, who was run over by a truck when he was about seven years old. Anna, born in 1921 and passed away in January 2001. Anthony (my father), born in 1922 and passed away in March 1994. Antoinette (Dolly), born in 1924 and passed away in October 1993. John, passed away in October 1972. Luke who lives in Santa Clara, California. Rose, born in 1932, lives in Clifton, N.J. Angelo, passed away in June 1972. Margaret, born in 1938 and lives in Hawthorne, N.J. Joseph passed away in the early 1960's, and Josephine followed a few years later. My father Anthony and his first wife had a son, Mark. Mark has a son named Michael. Mark lives in New York with his wife Lisa. They are both actors and work in theater. My father and his second wife had four children; my sisters Jean, Jacqie and Toni and me. I have two beautiful, incredibly smart children: Nicholas Matteo (born in July 2003) and Giuliana Marie (born December 2004). And my second son, Andrew David (born February 2016). And, my stepson Andrii ("Andrew", born December 2009) Tarasenko. There is a couple by the name of Len and Anna Scarola in Delaware who, according to my mom, has a lot of info on Scarola ancestry. They had a Scarola family reunion a few years back up north, but unfortunately I was unable to go. Maybe, together we can plan another.
How Related: I am a Scarola and I have many Scarola relatives. :)

Message: Hello Scarola family! My grandfather, Angelo Scarola came to America from Bari (Grumo Appula) in about 1905. His wife was Margaret Vitulli. They came with two daughters and later had 8 more children. Their names (the names I knew them by) were Minnie, Carrie, Rita, Francis, Dan, Will, Dominic, Pat, Anthony (my father) and uncle Chubby (I never knew his real name, we just called him uncle Chubby). They lived in Brooklyn for a long time and I think grandpa worked in the ice and coal business. In about the 20's or 30's they moved to Elizabeth, NJ. From there, everyone kind of spread out into the suburbs. My father and mother (Anthony and Ruth) had 3 children. My sister Susan is the oldest, followed by my brother Anthony. They both live in Jersey. I never really knew much about my grandpa and grandma and would love to find any information anyone here may have about them. I know they had many brothers and sisters and from the sound of other postings, someone may be able to tell me more. Thanks in advance and I hope to hear from you. Ciao!

Message: Hi! I am Steve's sister and Bill's cousin. It looks like we are all from Bari. Has everyone checked out the Ellis Island website? We found the passenger manifest from when our grandmother arrived. It sure is interesting seeing all the Scarolas. What ever happened to the restaurant in Brooklyn? Does anyone know? (PS to Susan from Putnam Valley-- I thought I was the only one with this name. Amazing!) I remembered some more stuff. Like how our grandfather was recruited for the king because he was a tall man, and how he left to come to America before he went in the army. I also remember we were taken as children to some saint's feat day in the Bronx where the statue was carried around. It was not a huge festival but was held in a small park. Any of this ring any bells?

Frank, Scarola, Male
Message: Greetings Scarola's of the World. We apparently are a large group. It would also appear that most of us originated in Bari Italy. We may be separated by several generations but logic would indicate that somehow we are all related. I am Frank Scarola, Son of Giuseppi Scarola and Rosa D'armiento of Grumo, Appula, Bari. My parents immigrated here in 1955, My father had 5 brothers and three sisters, Giuseppi, Saverio, Stefano, Franco, Michale, Antoinette, Maria and Graciella. All of them came to America and lived around the NYC area. Unfortunately they are all now deceased. My Fathers parents were VitoAntonio Scarola and Nunzia Marziliano. From reading the other postings here it appears that most of the Scarola's are related to the ones that came here in the 1920's and earlier. These were contemporary of my Grandparents. To confirm our exact relationships We would have to go back to the late 1800's early 1900's and put together a record of the Scarola's in Grumo, Bari, Italy to figure out who was who. Lot's of luck to all of you

Message: Hello Everyone. This is Robert Kutz Jr. (AKA) KOOS, First Cousin of Very Pretty Jackie, Sweet and I mean Sweet Toni-Ann, Beautiful Baby Jean, and Good Looking Little Anthony. Helloooooooooooooooo Scarola Family !! I just thought I'd say a few words to my four favorite cousins. so how is everyone ? I hope everyone is ok, with good Health and Happiness. Please don't get offended by the names I used, but thats the ones I remember from over 27 or so years ago. Personally I think there cute, don't you agree with me Baby Jean ? We haven't stayed in touch for many many years, but I always thought about all of you from time to time over the years. I am very sorry about your father. He was a good and loveable man. He also was a tough and very funny man. When we were kids, my brother Stu and I , idolized him. We wanted to be just like Uncle Tony. We would say Uncle Tony did this and Uncle Tony did that. We watched him make good things out of junk. Build things out of nothing, Fix anything that had to be fixed. He was a natural Jack of all Trades. I loved him cause he was always Laughing with us kids, joking around all the time with us, and he always made us laugh and happy. He was also a Strong dude and of course a Man's Man. God Bless Him. I couldn't come to his funeral, cause I cannot attend them any more. But your father's, my uncle's memory will be in my heart for as long as I live. Also dear Judy, I'm sorry you lost a good man and Husband Tony. I know you loved and cared for him very much. Anthony, Baby Jean, Toni-Ann, and Jackie, I have some funny stories about all of us when we were kids and you lived in Woodridge, New Jersey. Your father took us to the lakes and beaches and we had loads of fun. I'd love to talk to all of you sometimes, for you are my only First cousins, no others, very small Kutz Family, my father Bob Kutz was an only child. Anthony I like the Scarola Web site. You did a good job on it. Also when we talk, I have some small Antidotes and funny little stories about hanging out as a kid with your dad and my dad. Message: Hi, Just happened to see your site. My grandfather was named Donato Scarola. He was born in 1898 in Bari, Grumo Appula. He served in the Italian Army during World War I. In the war, he delivered material to the front line with a mule. He then immigrated to the Bronx where his father already was (sorry, don't know his name). Interestingly enough, his father had told him to get off the boat at the first stop. For some reason, the boat unexpectedly stopped at Boston, and my gradfather insisted on leaving the boat there! My great grandfather had to go to Boston to get him. My grand grandfather didn't like America and moved back to Italy, but my grandfather remained. My grandfather was the eldest of I believe 6 children. The next four were girls and the youngest was a boy. In the US, he delivered ice in the Bronx. He married by grandmother, and had two daughters Virginia (1928)and Marie (1930). Marie was my mother. My grandfather lived with us when I was a boy. After my mother died at a young age in 1971, he briefly moved back to Italy to live with his brother (don't know his name, but my father would). Things didn't work out there, and he moved back to the US a year later. He died in 1975, unfortunately suffering from Alzheimer's disease. I was curious about any history concerning cancer among women. Both my mother and her sister died at young ages.

Message: Tony, I found your site by pure accident and my father will be so excited. I will send him the link. I may not be a direct part of your family, but for Scarola's, we are all family! (John) Doug Scarola. Winter Park, FL. Added 6/15/03: Tony, You had asked about my Great Grandfathers name it was Vito and he was married to Rose. My Great Grandmother was sent back to Italy as she had diabetes. Can you imagine that we sent people away for that? She went back with his sister Mary, as she was just a baby. Eventually, Mary came back to the US and married a Centoducatti, where she had a LARGE family. My grandfather also had 3 other sisters, Clara, Angela and Katie. Katie also ended up here in the US. From my fathers recollection, my great grandfather, Vito, had some money and set the boys up in the ice & coal business. He would also set other new immigrants up in business, giving them a horse and wagon with the stipulation that they buy all the coal and ice from him. Needless to say, he made a lot of money with it. He went back to Italy when my grandfather was 8 years old, leaving him with $1, which he spent at the Polo Grounds on a ball game. When Vito returned to Italy, he bought the olive orchard which my father said was so large that it would take you a whole day to travel its perimeter by horse. He also owned a lot of real estate as well. Mussolini took it all and imprisoned the family as he kept sending olive oil to the family here in the US. At the wars end, it was all returned and Vito passed on. Rose died in prison. When the brothers went to settle the estate, my grandfather wanted none of the proceeds, so he sent his whole share of the estate to the church. He was still angry that he left him with only $1 and no education at all, as he had to work to take care of himself. He got started in the fruit business in the bronx when he met my grandmother, Anna di Martini, as it was her parents who were in the produce business. There is a lot more to the story and maybe if you put this family reunion together, we can share more. I have a feeling your side of the family is from one of Vito's brothers. My part of the family is from Bari, from Venetta. Hope to hear from you soon. Best regards, Doug

The girl at B.M. told me about this website. It's a small world. Maybe they remember Susan and Maryann Healy from across the street. I now live in Pembroke Pines, FL Take Care.

Message: Hello there! My family told me about your web forum. I am also a Scarola as you can see! My father Vito Scarola was born in Grumo Appula, just outside Bari and is one of 6 children - all still alive (Antoinette (Still in Italy), Nancy, Maria, Anna, Nicola, and Vito). His parent were Grace (I forgot her maiden name!) and Michael - both who have passed away. They came to this country on the Andrea Doria, 6 mos before it sank and settled in Brooklyn on Knickerbocker Ave. Since then the family has scattered. My Dad (Vito) & Mom (Jeannette) live in Charlotte, NC as does my brother - another Vito. Some live in NY, and some live in PA. I liked your websiteand at some point I would be interested in learning more of the Scarola genealogy. Sincerely, Stephanie

Message: Tony & Veronica, I must take some time from my day to congratulate the both of you for your great GLOBAL SCAROLA site. We Italians (&especially Italian-Americans) love to discover our roots & our relationship to other familoies whose roots originate in the same home towns. Its great! I'm a PANZARINO of the Brooklyn moving company Panzarino family. Way back (when I was a young boy), my grandfather Guiseppe told me that there was a relationship between the Scarola's & Panzarino's. Of course, I never thought anything of this until I grew up. Somehow, when your grandparents are gone, you begin to search for roots. As a teenager, I had many meals in Scarola's restaurant on Church Avenue. Anyway, while perusing your web-site, I did find the name PANZARINO! It's like unlocking secrets of the past. We too have a site. Panzarino.com. Take a look at it. Once again, congratulations and best of luck to all. Joseph F. Panzarino (JoeP450@Yahoo.com).

Message: Tony, I am trying to find an Angelo A. Scarola who attended a United State Air Force intensive Russion Language Class at Indiana University in 1961-62. The reason I am looking for him is that we are planning a reunion for next year and would like to have everyone who was in the class in attendance. Our Tony was from Metuchen, New Jersey, but we have been unable to find him there. If you are not the person I am seeking, I apologize for taking your time, but if you could give me a little assistance in locating Tony, it would be appreciated. If I've found the right guy, please contact me, or John Sheehan at groznyj@aol.com or Gene Phelan at ggphelan@yahoo.com. So far we can account for all but fourteen of the fifty two who started the class with us. We have been looking for about a month now, primarily just two of us. If you would like to see what our Angelo looked like in 1962, one of the guys has a web site and there's a class picture at; russian.two.home.comcast.net. Angelo is in the third row back, the last person on the right. In a couple of days this will be updated with everyones name displayed. Thanks for your time and assistance. John Mulvey.

Message: Hello, my name is Michelle Hesse. I am not related to the Scarola's but found the family website and reference to the restaurant at 121 Church in Brooklyn. I have a question regarding an artist that sold his artwork there around 1950, possibly even early 40's- he was going by the name Robert H. Centurion. He had multiple names but appears to have stuck with the last name Centurion after about 1940. He did modern art typically. He received Guggenheim fellowships and then disassociated with them in 1941. He had a German accent although Guggenheim said he was American, he said he was born in Beisig Silesia (Germany) and his father was American according to a newspaper article I found from 1950. Is there anyone that knows what happened to him or anything about him that I could contact? Thank you for this website and your time. Michelle Hesse (michellerhesse@gmail.com)
